The 6-Foot Beach Chair at Keansburg’s Boardwalk
Share
Jeff took on a unique project for the town of Keansburg, NJ: building a six-foot-tall Adirondack-style beach chair. Now standing proudly at the entrance of the Keansburg Waterfront Boardwalk, the chair has quickly become a local landmark and a fun spot for visitors to stop and snap photos.
If you’ve been following the American Craftsman Podcast, you already know the story behind the chair. Jeff, owner of Greene Street Joinery, agreed to build the project as a donation to the community where his shop is located. While Keansburg covered the cost of materials, Jeff volunteered his time, skills, and shop resources to bring the oversized chair to life.
Ordering Lumber Sight Unseen
Instead of hand-picking lumber, Jeff decided to order the materials online from Lowe’s and have them delivered directly to the shop. For anyone who’s ever worried about the quality of big-box-store lumber arriving “sight unseen,” this project was a good test case.
In the build video, Jeff walks through each board, pointing out straight, clean pieces and others with some twist or wane. His verdict? The delivery was surprisingly solid, especially on larger dimensional lumber like 2x12s. The experience showed that, in the right situations, having material delivered can be a worthwhile time-saver.
A Must-Have Shop Tool: The Hafla Cart
Alongside the chair build, Jeff also shared one of his favorite shop essentials: the Hafla parts cart. Designed with adjustable partitions and heavy-duty casters, these carts make it easy to organize, store, and move hundreds of pounds of lumber or CNC-cut parts around the shop. Jeff started with one; now he has four. For any shop, big or small, it’s the kind of tool you don’t realize you need until you use it.

Building the Chair
The chair itself came together with timberlock screws, deck screws, and PL adhesive for extra strength. Even though some footage was lost during filming, we still get a close look at the final assembly, including attaching the arms and finishing details.
Once complete, the massive Adirondack chair was ready to head out to its new home at the Keansburg waterfront. Built to handle the outdoor elements and plenty of use, it’s both a piece of functional art and a lasting gift to the community.
